MR (Medium Rigid) Truck Licence

A MR (Medium Rigid) Licence allows you to drive any truck or bus with 2 axles. To be eligible, you must have held your car licence (or higher) for at least 12 months.

Vehicle Entitlements

• Any motor vehicle with two axles and more than 8 tonnes GVM

• Any towed trailer must not exceed 9 tonnes GVM

Pre-Requisites

Applicants must:

• Have held a Class C licence (not a learner) for at least 1 year

• Pass the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) Rigid Knowledge Test

• Obtain a Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) logbook and guidebook

Course Duration

• Up to 6 hours training & assessment time

• RMS requires 48 hours notice for the final competency test

During your training, you will learn and perform the following competencies:

• Pre-Operational Checks

• Cabin Drill

• Start, Move Off, Shut Down & Secure

• Steering, Gears, Brakes & Accelerator Control

• Crash Avoidance Space (CAS) – creation & protection

• Road Rules & Directions

• Reversing Manoeuvres

• Hill Start & Stop

• Load Securing (for buses & trucks)

• Bus-Specific Stop Procedure (if applicable)

• Final Competency Test

• Summative Assessment
