HR (Heavy Rigid) Truck Licence

A HR (Heavy Rigid) Licence is the highest class of truck licence you can obtain directly from holding a car licence. It opens the door to driving some of the largest trucks on Australian roads and significantly increases your job opportunities.

Vehicle Entitlements

• Any motor vehicle with three or more axles and more than 8 tonnes GVM

• Any towed trailer must not exceed 9 tonnes GVM

• Includes vehicles in the MR class and articulated buses

Pre-Requisites

Applicants must:

• Have held a Class C, LR or MR licence (not a learner) for at least 2 years total

• Pass the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) Rigid Knowledge Test

• Obtain a Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) logbook and guidebook

Course Duration

• Up to 6 hours training & assessment provided

• RMS requires 48 hours’ notice for the final competency test

During your HR training, you will learn and demonstrate the following:

• Pre-Operational Checks

• Cabin Drill

• Start, Move Off, Shut Down & Secure

• Steering, Gears, Brakes & Accelerator Management

• Crash Avoidance Space (CAS) – creation & protection

• Road Rules & Directions

• Reversing Manoeuvres

• Hill Start & Stop

• Load Securing (truck & bus)

• Bus-Specific Stop Procedure (if applicable)

• Final Competency Test

• Summative Assessment / Reviews
