A heavy truck is a truck or lorry with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 4,500 kilograms (9,920 pounds), which includes medium-duty trucks. The GVWR includes the weight of the truck itself, the maximum load that it may safely carry and the weight of any trailer it tows.

HC (Heavy Combination) Truck Licence

A HC (Heavy Combination) Licence allows you to drive a truck or prime mover towing one trailer. This licence is ideal for drivers wanting to progress into bigger vehicles and improve their earning potential. To be eligible, you must have held a MR or HR licence for at least 12 months.

Vehicle Entitlements

Any motor vehicle with three or more axles and more than 8 tonnes GVM
Any towed trailer must not exceed 9 tonnes GVM
Includes MR class vehicles and articulated buses

Pre-Requisites

Applicants must:

Have held a MR or HR licence for at least 12 months
Complete the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) Rigid Knowledge Test
Obtain a Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) logbook and guidebook

Course Duration

Up to 7 hours of training & assessment provided
RMS requires 48 hours’ notice for the final competency test
